I had the opportunity to shoot this lovely trio of lab ladies while Ottawa. Three characters, to say the least. And once again, the sun was being playful and nice to me.

Look… we caught nothing that day. Nada. Niet. Except the close call with a huge brown trout that broke my dad’s line, rod and ego. But that is not the point. It’s all about silence. Or at least the small moments of it. Getting up at an ungodly hour, prepping gear that has been stored for 10 months, guessing how cold it will get and dressing accordingly, then sweating in said clothing because you’re not ready to leave the house just yet. Getting out into the cold, dark morning. Heading on to the lake, climbing down, pretending that divine favor is guiding you as you chose the spots to drill holes. Then drilling. Two concentric circles around the axis of the apparatus. Moves used in no other human activity, but this ridiculous idea of catching fish under a sheet of ice. Or Maybe Mr. Miyagi would have an application to that. Then the scramble to get the dumb lines up and ready, flags down. Bait.
And then wait. The sun as yet to rise, but we are right on schedule. The silence, finally. Or maybe not. Relative, maybe. Compared to the bite of blade on ice during the drilling, yes. But not real silence. Other men out to assert their patient supremacy on ice, motorized drills far away, the wind on the lake.
Not silence. But calm, none the less. And then sunrise. Now it’s just waiting and chatter. The moment’s over. I retire.
Just a shoot for fun. Trying skate photography for the first time. Mostly winging it. I still need to resolve the motion blur issue caused by the max synch speed. A nice cloudy day would fix it all!
